Dialing 911 by Mistake

Don’t Hang Up

If you accidentally dial 911, do not hang up. Stay on the line and let the Communications Officer know it was a mistake.

Once a 911 call is placed, it is automatically logged into the system, even if you hang up right away. If you disconnect without speaking to the dispatcher, they are required to call you back to confirm there is no emergency.

If they are unable to reach you, or if there is any concern for safety, law enforcement will be dispatched to the location shown on the 911 system to ensure everything is okay.

Why It Matters

Unintentional 911 calls take time and resources away from real emergencies. You can help by:

  • Staying on the line and calmly explaining it was a mistake

  • Locking your phone when it’s in your pocket or bag

  • Teaching children how and when to call 911 appropriately
